Orthodontic treatments

The orthodontic treatment aims the correction of the position of the teeth, promoting the alignment and the leveling of the dental arches and, whenever possible, the correction of the dimensions and positions of the jaws, in order to guarantee a healthy occlusion and promoting the dento-facial aesthetics. The patient improves his smile, his self-esteem and, consequently, his degree of social influence.

The orthodontic appliances apply forces to move the teeth. Nowadays there’s a wide choice between removable and fixed, visible and invisible, because they have evolved immensely. ORTOPÓVOA has proven curricular competence for the use of the latest and modern appliances, such as fixed appliances with conventional and aesthetic braces, self-ligating, as well as the so-called invisible devices such as INVISALIGN.

Important note: The orthodontic treatments should be performed by orthodontic specialists. The Portuguese Dental Association (OMD) has accredited them as professionals who have specialized knowledge in orthodontics. After becoming dentists, these professionals attend a university specialization course (recognized by the OMD) in a 3 years full time, which allows them to apply for the specialty exam in OMD. At ORTOPÓVOA, the specialist in orthodontics is the Clinical Director, Prof. Dr. Afonso Pinhão Ferreira, full professor at the Faculty of Dental Medicine – University of Porto and coordinator of the orthodontic specialty course between 1999 and 2019.

Interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment plan

ORTOPÓVOA applies a global patient-centered clinical practice, giving priority to personalized care, paying the utmost attention to the main patient complaint.

To achieve excellence in all dental medical treatments, we use previously studied and standard routine procedures.

Each patient goes through protocol processes to assess the diagnosis (what is not well) and the treatment plan (what must be done to be well).

For this, the patient takes the following steps:

1^st Consultation – Patient is welcomed, conducted and examined

At the first consultation, the patient is welcomed by the Receptionist Liliana Gomes, who will help fill out the identification form as well as the informed consent regarding data protection. Soon after, the patient will be accompanied by the Administrative Director, Dr. Maria Alexandrina, who will take him/her to the Rx Room and the Photography Studio to collect the necessary data to study the patient’s case.

There, Assistant Carina Sesta will take the intra and extraoral photographs, the panoramic radiography and the lateral cephalogram of the face. Soon after, the patient is conducted to the main medical office, where he will do 3D dental scanning and attached structures (today we no longer make conventional dental impressions), and then consulted by the Clinical Director, Prof. Dr. Afonso Pinhão Ferreira who will do the clinical examination and the odontogram and, if necessary, an orthodontic, an occlusal and an orthognathic examination.

All these data, after being standardized according to the needs of each clinical case, will enable the necessary interdisciplinary study to establish the diagnosis, the treatment plan and the corresponding budget, as well as the number of consultations needed. This study is, in fact, carried out by ORTOPÓVOA’s dental medical team, i.e. the clinical staff meets on Friday’s mornings to study the cases. Each case is then thoroughly analyzed by several dentists, which is a clinical added value.

2^nd Consultation – Patient is informed and held responsible

This consultation is very interesting as the patient is deeply informed about all aspects related to his case. We believe that a good decision is based on complete information, so we advise the patient to be accompanied by family members. Consultation always takes place with the help of audio-visual media.

In the first part, the patient is informed about general aspects, such as:

how ORTOPÓVOA works;
how we study the cases;
the number of consultations required for treatment;
what is the expected treatment time;
what are budget and payment options.

In the second part Prof. Dr. Afonso Pinhão Ferreira, will talk about the clinical aspects of the case, showing similarly treated cases and, at the end of the consultation, an email is sent with a PDF document with all the diagnostic data; the patient will be given a written report with the treatment plan and the budget.

Accepting our proposal for treatment and its budget, it will be scheduled in the different specialties until the end of treatment.
